Easy Sewn Hand Towels
Materials Needed
2 pieces cut fabric (using the pattern at the bottom of the blog)
1 hand towel, cut in half widthwise
1 button or snap
Prepare Materials
Press the two pieces fabric and half of the hand towel. Pick out a button or snap to use.
Sew Towel Top
Fold over the bottom hem of each piece of fabric 3/8” and press. Place fabric right sides together and pin. Sew the sides and top together using a 3/8” seam allowance, leaving the bottom open. Snip off the corners of the fabric, near the seam.
Inside out the fabric, so that the pattern side is showing. Push out the corners, so that they are crisp. Press the fabric.
Measure out where to place the buttonhole. It should be placed 3/4” from the top edge and centered on the fabric. With a fabric pen or pencil, place a dot at this mark and start sewing the button hole at this mark.
Once the buttonhole is sewn, cut the opening. To do this, use a thread cutter to cut a hole at the bottom of the hole, then use a pair of small sharp sewing scissors to cut the rest of the way.
Next, sew on the button. To do this, fold the fabric in half so that the top edge and bottom edges line up evenly. Using a fabric pen or pencil, draw a line where the button hole is so that when it’s opened back up it’s easy to see where the button needs to be sewn on. Sew on the button.
In place of a button, a snap can also be used. Place the top part of the snap 1” from the top edge. To determine where to place the bottom part of the snap, fold the fabric in half so that the top and bottom edges line up exactly.
Sew the Towel into the Top
First, pleat the towel along the top cut edge of the towel. Being sure that the towel will neatly fit into the bottom opening of the towel top. It may take a few trials before the towel fits nicely into the towel top. Once it does, pin it together, then baste. (The easiest way to baste the towel is by using a large stitch size on a sewing machine.)
Place the top cut edge of the towel inside the bottom opening of the towel top. Adjust the towel placement until it sits nicely inside the opening. Sew it together using a topstitch 1/4” away from the bottom edge.
