Yellow Birthday Cake

This is my grandmother’s original yellow birthday cake recipe. I’ve eaten it just about every year on my birthday for pretty much my entire life and it’s never disappointed anyone. It’s a classic and versatile cake which can be decorated any way which you’d like.

One time my grandmother made me a Barbie doll cake using this recipe. The cake was the skirt of the doll and there was a Barbie doll inset into the cake. So be creative! And try to have fun while you’re doing it!

Enjoy! ~ Kelly

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350º F.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking powder.
  3. In a large bowl or the bowl of your stand mixer, cream the sugar and butter until light and fluffy. Mix in the milk, vanilla, and eggs. Add in the dry mixture, adding half at a time and mixing after each addition. Beat together using a hand mixer or stand mixer until just combined. Try to avoid over mixing your batter.
  4. Pour batter into a greased and floured 13 x 9 inch cake pan or two round 8 inch cake pans.
  5. Bake the 9 x 13 cake for 40-45 minutes or the round cakes for 30-35 minutes.
  6. Once cooled, top with your frosting of choice.
